For the first time in the framework of the Litkafe project at the Russian Centre for Science and Culture in Brussels, we talked not about a Russian writer, but a Belgian one.
Opening the meeting, the head of the Centre, Vera Bunina, reminded that the full name of Rossotrudnichestvo is The Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States, Compatriots Living Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation. And the conversation about a Belgian writer of such level as De Coster, both in Russian and French, is exactly the promotion of international humanitarian cooperation. Therefore, in the future we will continue to discuss the work of both Russian and European prose writers and poets.
According to journalist Leonid Sokolnikov, Charles De Coster did not write enough to be considered a classic. But enough to make it impossible not to talk about him.
Gathering the legends of Flanders, the Netherlands and Germany about the medieval folk hero Thyl Ulenspiegel, Charles Вe Coster created a brilliant mid-19th century novel, The Legend of Ulenspiegel. At the evening, we talked about the life and work of the famous writer.
In addition, the audience had read several episodes from the novel, and at the end of the evening everyone had the opportunity to share their thoughts about Charles De Coster and his hero.
